Description:

This paper discusses Eric Fromm's view of religion and how he defines religion as an important tool in psychoanalysis. The paper goes on to explain how Fromm is far more comfortable with Sigmund Freud's handling of religion than with Carl Jung's, since Freud also saw, albeit indirectly, an inner connection between self-realization and religious principles. The paper also discusses how Fromm thought that there was "good" religion, in the sense that religion could be used for positive purposes in creating more functional people and societies, while bad religion entailed a form of religion that made people and societies more dysfunctional and repressed.

From the Paper:

"Erich Fromm defines religion as an important tool in psychoanalysis. He is far more comfortable with Sigmund Freud's handling of religion than with Carl Jung's, since
Freud also saw, albeit indirectly, an inner connection between self-realization and religious principles. Clearly, Fromm thought that there was "good" religion, in the sense that religion could be used for positive purposes in creating more functional people and societies. Bad religion, meanwhile, entailed a form of religion that made people and societies more dysfunctional and repressed.
"Fromm drew many positive things from religion for his psychoanalysis. This is clearly shown, for instance, by how much he drew selectively from Buddhism and the Bible. He clearly saw a place for religion in psychoanalysis. In many respects, he was a kind of neo-Freudian, in the sense that he believed that mental health and social conditions were inseparable.(24-27) Fromm also observed that love was a faculty that humans had to develop. It was precisely in this sense that he saw the importance of religion, since religion emphasized the importance of love."
