This paper discusses Ellen Harvey's contribution to the 2008 Whitney Biennial exhibition within the context of her earlier work about the ephemerality of art, changing museum settings, and self-portraiture and the artist and viewer. "Ellen Harvey is no stranger to the Whitney Museum of American Art. From 1998 to 1999 the New York-based British artist participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program, an intensive yearlong course in which studio, curatorial, and critical studies students interact and study contemporary cultural theory and art history while working on individual projects in their respective fields of study. In 2003 Harvey created "A Whitney for the Whitney" at Philip Morris (Altria), an installation in the Whitney's lobby gallery of the Philip Morris (now Altria) building in which she painted..."
