People are no longer confined to purchasing only what is available in their own neighborhood or region. Electronic commerce has enabled people to take advantage of worldwide markets, to locate hard-to-find items, and expand their shopping in ways that have never before been seen.
"Electronic commerce has opened up the world to shoppers, as well as to businesses. Businesses can now attract customers from all over the world, making their marketing efforts much broader. Most large retail chains now have an electronic commerce division, with web sites that contain links to purchase almost anything a person can purchase in the actual physical store. New and exciting avenues of generating revenue have been opened to businesses through electronic commerce. However, the real beneficiaries of electronic commerce have been small, independently owned, specialty businesses. These companies have now realized that the niche market for their product likely extends worldwide, and have accordingly opened up retail electronic commerce divisions of their own."
