The paper relates that gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that is developed during pregnancy (Clavell, 2002, p. 10; Clark, 2004, p. 8) and it is most often is found in women that are in their second half of pregnancy and only occurs in approximately 2-5% of pregnant women (Clavell, 2002, p. 10). The paper reveals that gestational diabetes generally is evident only during the pregnancy, however, in some cases, women that develop gestational diabetes will also develop type 2 diabetes after the child is born at some point in life (Clavell, 2002, p. 10). The paper looks at how according to the Mayo Clinic, when a woman develops gestational diabetes she must understand how this condition affects herself and her unborn child, the risks associated with having gestational diabetes and ensure that blood sugar levels are maintained (Clavell, 2002, p. 11).
