Jean Piaget identified and described the intellectual growth as characterized by a series of stages. Different behavioral characteristics mark each of these stages. According to Piaget "early childhood" is the "pre-operational stage" of development. At this age thinking is predominantly "egocentric", meaning that the child generally understands objects or actions as they impact on him or her. By ages 6 or 7 many children are beginning to enter the "concrete operational" stage, at which time they can begin to understand the "conservation" of concepts..."
