This paper discusses whether or not recycling is good from an economic perspective. The paper looks at Toronto's recycling programs and highlights how the costs of recycling are higher than its revenues. The paper highlights how there is a danger associated with the belief that recycling is always good as more efficient, since appropriate programs may be passed over in favour of recycling. The paper asserts that when this occurs, recycling does not make sense for the environment.
From the Paper:"During recent times, it has been common to consider recycling as being something that is good. Evidently this began with concern for the environment, which is quite appropriate. More specifically, society has grown to the point that waste has become a major problem. Hence, recycling is regarded as a means of effectively dealing with such a problem. As the appeal of recycling grew it also became common to consider such a process as being advantageous in all instances. In one respect, this would seem to make a great deal of sense. More specifically, waste that is used again in some other form is beneficial for the environment and is a resource for society.
"However, a detailed analysis of the way in which recycling has developed shows that this is not the case. This is not to say that certain advantages are not associated with recycling. That is, there are times when it contributes effectively and efficiently to waste management. Instead, it would appear that the way in which it has been promoted within our society has meant that, at times, the costs of recycling often outweigh the benefits but it is undertaken nonetheless. This indicates that while recycling makes sense for the environment, this is not the same as saying that it always makes sense for the environment."
