From the Paper:

"From movies and television shows like E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Men in Black and the X-Files, Hollywood imagination continues to create scenarios wherein aliens exist and often interact with human beings on earth. However, despite enormous controversy surrounding the existence of aliens and UFOs, a good deal of evidence exists throughout such literature that aliens and UFOs are more than the stuff of creative imaginations. One of the most famous incidents of UFO and alien visitations in the U.S. stems from the late 1940s. On July 4, 1947, in the town of Roswell, New Mexico, a number of people witnessed the crash and wreckage of a UFO. As Randle Schmitt (2004, p. 1) argues, "These credible witnesses included respected members of the local medical, law-enforcement, military, and scientific communities."
"Most of the witnesses at Roswell maintained they observed five alien beings, the inside of their spaceship, and a good deal of shattered debris that seemed to possess unexplainable properties. Initially the Air Force maintained the crash and debris were the result of some kind of flying disk, but the very next day they explained the incident as the result of a crashed weather balloon. Rumors about Roswell and a potential crash of aliens and their airship continue to be a subject of controversy to this day. Such rumors are fueled by the existence of an area called Groom Lake, more commonly referred to as "Area 51" (Area, 2005, p. 1). Area 51 is an off-limits government installation in the desert of Nevada. Allegedly this is where U.S. scientists have studied crashed alien airships or UFOs in an effort to gain technological advances that will benefit the military. The area is so off-limits that that "even its airspace is forbidden" (Area, 2005, p. 1)."
