Description:
This paper states a problem that exists not only in Maricopa County, Arizona, but nationwide with respect to the Latino community and social work. The paper discusses how they are either unsure of or not accustomed to seeking help, and whether it be fear or pride, these individuals often miss important social services when it comes to health care especially. In addition, the paper notes that they can be singled out in the justice system.
From the Paper:
"The lack of culturally competent social workers who can effectively work with the Latino community in Maricopa County, AZ has to do with the culture's conception of what social work is and the community's view of them. This is not unique to Maricopa County or the State of Arizona, but a problem throughout the United States. Latino populations tend to believe that seeking help is unacceptable. A sense of pride causes them to believe they are weak or less competent should they ask for or accept help from social workers. Moreover, it is necessary to realize that the problem is compounded when the individuals in question are undocumented."Cite this Term Paper:
