The paper discusses the development of the advanced practice nurse (APN) who will compliment the traditional knowledge and education of a registered nurse (RN) with an advanced education, extended or more formalized training and a more varied body of knowledge. The paper explores the research that demonstrates that the increased presence of the APN in clinical settings should help to improve critical reflection in the nursing contexts and will allow a greater capacity to respond to the challenges and pressures in the healthcare environment. The paper therefore concludes that in spite of the current state of nursing, characterized by shortages in personnel, higher costs per patient and lower quality care in return, education and training for the APN will help to bear improvement in all of these areas by bringing both critical reflection and greater versatility to the position.
From the Paper:"The development of the Advanced Practice Nurse on an individual level is centered on a greater-than-average investment of time in nursing education. Nursing is a profession where capable and caring individuals can do a lot of good if given the proper education. The clinical context for the provision of healthcare offers individuals a great opportunity to help those in need as well as to address a crucial need in our job economy. However, educational settings must provide both education and support to prospective nurses and current nursing professional in continuing learning programs that are realistic and that pertain to immediately problematic conditions in the industry such as our topic of relevance. Today, there is a heavy demand for practical nursing professionals due to a shortage of healthcare professionals, rendering it all the more challenging to encourage nurses to engage longer terms of education. Shortages of personnel create a lower standard of medical attention for patients, lower job morale and high demand for qualified nurses. This is a problematic circumstance that concerns advanced practice nursing, and especially the new generation of nurses entering into or emerging from educational contexts. Therefore, educational curricula must be designed to stress the clinical implications of this reality as well as to help provide prospective nurses with what resources and tools are suitable and available to accommodate this condition."
