The paper relates that the possible conflict management strategies that can be employed by the criminal justice agency are forcing, accommodating, avoiding, compromising and collaborating. The paper then discusses how the approaches to conflict management used in the Simpson County Sheriff's Department are appropriate for the types of situations faced by the police officer in the field. The paper explains that a forcing conflict strategy is necessary in situations where criminal suspects refuse to comply, but a more collaborative approach is used when dealing with a criminal investigation.
From the Paper:"The police officer faces many dangers while in the field and usually does not have time to employ any other type of conflict strategy but force. The deputy sheriffs of the Simpson County Sheriff's Department are responsible for enforcing the law and ensuring there is order. Deputy Sheriffs must display firm resistance or actions were a response to an aggression or hostility (Williams, 2006). Settling disputes is one of the major role the police officer fills and while a more cooperative strategy can be applied if the conflict does not involve any potential risk or threat but in most cases the deputy sheriff inserts their authority or forces the citizens to obey.
"In the Simpson County Sheriff's department there is a more cooperative strategy employed when dealing with conflict with the exception of conflicts that need immediate resolution. Conflicts that require immediate solutions or call for the command to intercede will employ forcing strategies but when dealing with a criminal investigation a more cooperative conflict management strategy when conflict arises. Because communication and good decision making skills are essential to identifying potential evidence, locating and arresting criminal suspects, and conducting interrogations, a more collaborative conflict management strategy is necessary."
