"Because Europe developed with differing attitudes, beliefs and political and religious ideologies, the early Europeans in the colonies had diverse goals. In looking at the Spanish, French and English, it is apparent that the colonial economy was squarely built on slave owners, merchants and farmers. For instance, the Spanish relied heavily on conquest and slavery to exploit precious metals and other resources, whereas the French were more interested in the fur and fish trade and worked alongside the Native Americans.
