This paper explains that childhood obesity is a condition that places children and families at risk for multiple health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and lung and joint problems due to excessive weight. The paper examines methods of assessing families of obese children, associated theories and the Healthy People 2010 initiative for nutrition and overweight management. The paper concludes that advanced practice nurses need to be aware of the prevalence of childhood obesity and act as a case manager to intervene, provide education and make referrals appropriate for childhood obesity.

From the Paper:

"Assessment of overweight and obese children must include the entire family, family and cultural beliefs, and support system. Children learn from role models such as parents, teachers, caregivers, and community leaders. If the family's cultural practice and beliefs involve rewarding children with food or beliefs that fatness is a sign of health then education regarding the consequences of obesity may be required and cultural sensitivity needs to be insured."
