This paper considers Bosnia's role in the global market, with a special emphasis on the ways in which domestic conflict has informed that role. The paper discusses how Bosnia's role in the world market and economy can be labeled, at best, as poor, largely due not only to long-term political and ethnic tensions, but more specifically the horrific and disruptive 1992-5 civil war in that region. The paper describes how Bosnia has acquired large debts and faces food insecurity and economic woes. The paper concludes that Bosnia continues to import and export relatively small amounts of products, and trades with only a limited amount of partners, making the country take a low position in world trade.

From the Paper:

"Bosnia, merged with Herzegovina in 1918, is, like many Eastern European and former Soviet Bloc countries, considered in many ways to be part of the second world. Although rich in natural resources, and containing significant amounts of arable land, the country is not a wealthy one; its position in world trade is weak, and most people engage in agriculture, and have little post-secondary education. However, political upheavals during much of the twentieth century, coupled with civil war in the 1992 to 1995 period has left the area so devastated that many today would consider it a third world nation. Populations shifts created by the war, as well as territorial devastation, decline in morale, and greater difficulties in distributing resources equally have meant that many in the region face severe poverty. In fact, many charitable organizations and agencies which have traditionally gathered food and funds for the third world have contributed money and supplies to Bosnia in the years following the war. Continued political and ethnic tensions in the region continue to negatively impact poverty levels and resource distribution, however."
