"In the early twentieth century, the National Association of Colored Women (the "Association"), the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (the "Auxiliary"), and the National Council of Negro Women (the "Council") played important although different roles in the advance of blacks in America. These organizations' leaders, especially Mary Church Terrell, Mary McLeod Bethune, Dorothy Height, and Helena Wilson, shaped the rising strength of movements among black women.
