Description:
This paper discusses the role of black lesbian women in society through examining some pieces of writing that reflect their current status. First, the paper analyzes the article "Beauty on the Borderland: on Being a Black Lesbian on Being Beautiful", by J. Jones, which talks about the overall challenges that someone faces not only of being black and a woman, but lesbian as well. Next, the paper cites a book which discusses changing cultural perceptions of being gay or lesbian. Then, the paper addresses the issues raised in the writing from the outlook of a social worker, further stating that they help improve the overall understanding of the different problems faced by various groups within society. Additionally, the literature cited also describes some mental health issues faced by lesbians. The paper concludes by underscoring the importance of social workers to effectively reach out to African-American lesbians when they are facing crises or challenges.
From the Paper:
"In the article Beauty on the Borderland: on Being a Black Lesbian on Being Beautiful, it talks about the overall challenges that someone faces not only of being black and a woman, but lesbian as well. This takes place with the authors talking openly about the different encounters that face, by being a combination of all three. An example of this would be: when Jennifer says how living in the San Francisco Bay area helped encourage her to come out about being a lesbian. Then, when she moved to Ann Arbor the overall cultural attitudes were far different. As the area was more conservative, which discouraged women from coming out. Another way that the article highlights the different challenges faced by black lesbians is: through various cultural norms. In this particular aspect, certain words such as you are gay or lesbian have been tied to derogatory cultural meanings. Because of this negative stigma, many women are afraid to come out. A good example of this would be: when Gail talks about how a similar situation occurred in 20th century; as African Americans tried to hide who the were by doing the same things as whites..."Sample of Sources Used:
