This paper defines bioethics and explores the relationship that bioethics and pain management share. The paper focuses on the article, "Saving Superman: Ethics and Stem Cell Research", by Doug Post and Doug Knutson, that discusses the story of Christopher Reeve, a famous actor who was used to gain support for stem cell research. "Bioethics play a key role in today's society. It may be identified in through several mediums. It is revealed through the media, classrooms, offices, labs, and hospitals. (Jaffry) This may also be illustrated by reviewing one of the primary issues regarding the field. Stem cells have been a leading topic within the field for several years now. The case study from Doug Post and Doug Knutson of the Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University, entitled Saving Superman: Ethics and Stem Cell Research, reviews bioethics in relation to stem cells.
"The case study provided reviews the story of Christopher Reeve. Millions of people recognized him as Superman. He was known for this role, the athleticism he displayed, and his advocacy work. Reeve encountered a life threatening accident in May of 1995. (Post and Knutson ) While participating in a cross-country jumping event, his horse came to a complete stop. When this happened he was launched from the horse and landed headfirst. The landing caused Christopher to shatter his first and second vertebrae. (Post and Knutson ) He was paralyzed from his shoulders to his feet. Multiple medical complications arose from the accident. Reeve experienced pneumonia, wounds that wouldn't heal, blood clots, and dysreflexia. (Post and Knutson )"
