Description:
The paper discusses a bargaining strategy aimed at assisting management types as they strive to re-configure the collective agreement during a period of economic turmoil. Over the next several pages, the essay outlines what management hopes to achieve; why the sources utilized are important in making the case for re-configuring the existing agreement; what is taking place in the auto sector at the present time and what bargaining trends appear to be making in-roads; how NAFTA plays into all of this and what the future holds for the sector; and why it is believed that union representatives and their constituents will accept the offer. The paper concludes that if workers want to minimize the bleeding, they should embrace a management offer that allows for reasonable buy-outs of older workers (complete with provisions for job re-training) and for a freezing of wages and of benefits; to demand that things remain as they have been is frivolous because the market is clearly not what it has been.
