This paper explores the Arab American female in educational institutions and suggests that these girls face a lot of prejudice from both their family and peer groups as they try to adjust. The paper addresses anti-Arab racism, Western constructions of beauty and familial pressures and discusses how they result in difficult identity struggles. From the Paper:"Arab women, are made invisible in American society and have diverse experiences shaping their dual Arab-American culture and identity. Until recently, Arab-American and Arab-Canadian women have been left out of most Western feminist discourse and practice. Their alienation can be attributed to the following factors. First, the US census categorizes Arab-Americans as white, yet white American feminists do not address many of the issues affecting Arab-American or Arab-Canadian women's lives. Furthermore, Western feminism has a history of representing Arab women negatively, as backwards or oppressed. Secondly, while the feminist discourse of women of color or third world women addresses issues relevant to Arab-American and Arab-Canadian women's experiences, such as those related to women and race, ethnicity, culture, and/or immigration, most Arab-American women are not recognized because they are generally seen as white.
