A paper on the topic of acculturation. The paper explores what acculturation is as well as some of the current trends in this field. The writer discusses the process of acculturation and how this process relate to minorities in America.

From the Paper:

"In assimilation an individual or group would assume the cultural traits of a host society such as Americans and is allowed to participate in all social, economic, and political areas. Assimilation has two parts: one of behavioral or cultural assimilation and one of structural assimilation. When immigrant or ethnic minority groups take on the values and lifestyles of the dominant group, this is called behavioral assimilation. This process is called acculturation. Structural assimilation is when the group enters into social groups, institutions, and organizations. Behavioral and structural assimilation must occur to be considered as assimilation.
"History has shown that the U.S. has maintained cultural pluralism because individuals from diverse backgrounds have not been fully integrated into the majority culture at the educational, economic, or political level. Individuals from ethnic minority groups have attained little power; thus, examining the process of acculturation rather than assimilation becomes a more appropriate approach to describe the process of cultures coming together" (Garcia-Vazquez 306)."
