This paper examines the role of a nurse supervisor and discusses their professional characteristics and attributes of excellence. The paper also explores the strategies that can be adopted in developing these attributes and considers the influence these strategies could have on the future practice of a nursing student.

"The nursing supervisor plays an important role in the health institution or facility. The supervisor ensures that nurses in the health facility practice according to the laid down professional values and moral principles through the observance of the nursing code of conduct. In the nursing field, excellence as an attribute in performance and acquired skills is desired. Additionally, the supervisor ensures that nursing staff perform in accordance with the policies, standards and procedures of the health facility and the larger government bodies in charge of health in the country. Further, these individuals are also charged with the role of evaluating the quality of services or care provided by the nurses besides identifying their development and training needs. Apart from these nursing specific roles, nursing supervisors are also involved in the resolution of conflicts and client problems in the institution. Most importantly, the nursing supervisor acts as a role model for the nursing staff in the facility be manifesting the appropriate professional nursing image. As such, the supervisor must develop, possess, nurture and maintain the most desirable attributes of a nurse (Gardner, Chang, & Duffield, 2007). This paper will therefore examine the role of a nurse supervisor in the context of excellence discussing their professional characteristics and attributes."
