Description:

The author describes his strengths and weaknesses that emerged from this assessment and notes that there were not many surprising results. The author identifies the steps he should take to improve his managerial competence and considers the value of this self-assessment as a measure of his abilities. The author points out that self-assessment can be tricky, because not all of us are particularly prone to self-reflection, and while it is an adequate measure with respect to interpersonal skills, some technical skills and organizational skills, it does not address other critical managerial skills at all such as decision-making. The management skill set assessment used is included as an appendix to the paper.

From the Paper:

"The self-assessment was interesting. It covers a lot of managerial ground, indicating that management and leadership is perhaps a broader category than I realize. This is likely because not all of the facets discussed in the self-assessment are relevant to my position, so I sometimes forget that they exist. On the whole, however, the assessment was informative and caused me to give genuine pause. I realized that there are some areas where perhaps I could improve my performance and that some of these areas are actually important to my current role. I had my office manager conduct the second assessment, which I felt was apt since the office manager understands my role and has some insight into my performance. Also, since the office manager does not report to me, the responses were more likely to be unbiased.
"The strengths that emerged from this assessment were mainly with respect to analytical and organizational tasks. For example, I scored high on planning, vision and delegation. These tasks all involve being able to see broad systems and how small pieces fit within that system. This ability to analyze situations or objectives and organize the company around it definitely emerged as my primary managerial strength as the result of this assessment."
