What is Archaeology?
Archaeology can be defined as the scientific and systematic study of historic and prehistoric human life and culture via the recovery, examination, and analysis of the material remains and artifacts left behind, such as dwellings, graves, inscriptions, monuments, pottery and tools.
Careers in Archaeology
People who practice in the field of archaelogy are known as archaeologists and must have earned at least a B.A. or B.S. in archaeology or anthropology. The study of archaeology encompasses several different disciplines. These include art, biology, chemistry, geology, history.
For people interested in supervising field work, a graduate degree is needed. Archaeology jobs span a number of different areas including federal and state government, private companies, universities and colleges, and museums. Archaeologists can also work as consultants, conduct field investigations, publish research and analyze sites and artifacts.
Branches in Archaeology
There are many different branches of archaeology with each one focusing on either a specific method of research, type of material, geography, chronography, or theme. Some branches of archaeology are as follows: African archaeology, American archaeology, archaeometry, classical archaeology, Egyptology, ethno archaeology, European archaeology, experimental archaeology, forensic archaeology, antique or historic archaeology, industrial archaeology, maritime archaeology, and more.
Archaeological digs take place all over the world and are typically conducted by museums, universities, and historical societies. Some digs are staffed only by professionals or archaeology students, while some also take volunteers.
