From the Paper:

"There is currently a lack of awareness about the tourism opportunities in Niger. The nation has typically received only a very small number of foreign tourists in a given year. Tourists are estimated to account for 1.7% of the nation's GDP, which equates to $177.65 million per year. Other sources have the figure much lower - $29 million for 2003 for example (, 2009). For many years, around 5000 tourists per year would visit Niger's north, visiting nomadic camps and ancient ruins. Most of these came from Europe, but armed insurgency by Tuareg nomads has reduced tourism to the north, which is considered to be the most attractive part of the country (Lewis, 2010; Shark, 2009). According to the United Nations, the country averages around 60,000 international visitors each year, including business travelers (UN, 2010). There is little knowledge among potential tourists either about Niger's attractions in general or about the attractions that can be found in the south of the country in particular. "
