The paper argues that meritocracy is a compelling ideal in managerial culture as it reflects the view that the sole criterion for hiring should be merit and talent. However, the paper notes that critics of meritocracy argue that it is an ideology that obscures the reality of systemic discrimination in our society, and that only through affirmative action can this reality be addressed. This paper argues the thesis that, in fact, both arguments are fundamentally correct in different ways, and that a successful managerial culture is one that incorporates elements of both meritocracy and affirmative action.
