The paper relates that the National Center for Health Statistics indicates that there are approximately 38 million individuals that receive emergency room care related to hypertension each year and that 3.4 million individuals receive outpatient treatment for this health condition ("Hypertension", 2007, sec. 1). The paper further looks at how Temple University states that 40% of all people that are diagnosed with hypertension are African Americans and that this may be due to genetic causes that have yet to be determined (Nguyen, 2007, para. 1).
