Description:
The paper defines distributed software engineering as the creation and management of effective virtual teams that work continuously to produce state-of-the-art Web-based applications. The paper explains that distributed software engineering has components of software project management, product life-cycle management and transformational leadership included within it, and the most effective strike a balance between these attributes. The paper then examines the literature and finds that highly transformational styles of leaders can effectively manage distributed software engineering projects that are small in scope virtually, however, the paper notes that the research studies have yet to show conclusively what leadership skill sets will lead to exceptional performance with large-scale projects where face-time is also critical. The paper presents the research questions on this topic and includes an outline of the methodology and the timescale for research and planning.

From the Paper:
"The intersection of leadership styles, frameworks and approaches to managing projects including product lifecycle structures, and the decision of how virtual software engineering team will be all combine to determine the effectiveness of distributed software engineering teams and their projects will be. The effects of leadership styles on software product quality have been defined and empirically proven yet the impact of measuring the effects of leadership styles and type of software being developed have not (Sivasubramaniam, Murry, Avolio, Jung, 2002). The greater the complexity of a transaction-based system under development, for example an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, the greater the need for more transformational leadership (Forslund, Jonsson, 2010)."Transformational leadership as a determinant of team performance has been shown in traditional organizational structures for managing distributed software engineering projects(Antonakis, House, 2002). It has also been shown to be an effective leadership style for the development of industry and military distributed engineering distributed processes as well (Bass, 1998). The impact of transformational leadership styles in general and EI skills specifically in managing diverse distributed software engineering projects in virtual teams shows significant potential for greater research."
