This paper examines the pressing issue of poor compositional skills among middle-school children. In particular, the paper focuses upon the environmental and school-related factors that exacerbate the problem. The paper also reviews some general techniques and approaches that concerned middle school teachers can implement to assist students who are lagging behind their peers in this important skill. As the paper hopes to make clear, while the issue defies simple solutions, there is hope that a collaborative undertaking involving parents, teachers, school officials and students can lead to a better situation in the future.
From the Paper:"There is no question that writing problems have become a very serious, even ominous, issue in today's middle school classrooms (Hooper & Montgomery 1993, 616-617). The following paper will examine what it is that is causing this problem and what experts recommend all teachers, regardless of their discipline, can do to improve student writing. Without wishing to appear melodramatic, it may be said that the future of our society depends in large measure upon how successful educational experts are in addressing this pressing issue. The causes of reading disabilities are manifold and they have been with us for some time. To begin with, a child's early development is largely dependent upon the home life within which that child is reared. In other words, "children's early developmental spellings appeared to reflect their emerging understanding of the English writing system" (Edwards 2003, 137). "
