From the Paper:

"Some studies revealed that it was the aggregate of adversity factors (severe marital discord, low social class, large family size, paternal criminality, maternal mental disorder, and foster care placement) rather than the presence of any single factor that led to impaired development.
"The causes of ADHD are largely unknown. Some studies have shown that genetic factors play a role while others suggest that substances in the environment play a role. Some toxic chemicals are known to interfere with the same aspects of learning that are atypical in ADHD, and may therefore contribute to the etiology of ADHD.Current thinking is that a chemical imbalance of norepinephrine and dopamine neurotransmitters, found primarily in the frontal lobe area, have been suggested to be associated with the lack of arousal in the brain of those with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; these messengers arouse the brain, and provide an alert state of mind; thus, a deficiency of these neurochemicals produce a mode of somnolence ."
