Description:

The paper looks at the activities offered by after school programs and discusses the many substantial benefits they offer in terms of secure care, advancing student performance in school, augmenting student attendance, decreasing juvenile delinquency, improving self-esteem and communication skills and improving the general health and wellbeing of children. The paper examines the Community Learning Centers (CLC) in Wisconsin and discusses the successes and cost effectiveness of such programs. The paper notes the inadequate data on the influences of afterschool programs but points out the potential for cost savings from crime deterrence and enhanced learning results. In addition, the paper notes that in more and more neighborhoods, the afterschool programs that function throughout the school year are turning into summer programs that keep children protected, motivate them to study, and give working parents assurance that their kids are safe and overseen throughout the months when schools are not in session.

From the Paper:

"Ever since 1990 there has been an increase in interest in afterschool programs. The American community has developed into conscious of massive reimbursements that such programs can present and policy makers observe in these programs the opportunity to deal with many community and learning issues. Financial support for afterschool programs has developed considerably as a consequence of this discriminating attention. A lot of municipalities across the nation are mounting chief new plans paying attention on afterschool time, and a mounting amount of associations across the nation are examining and giving support for these programs. In a comparatively small amount of time, the afterschool area has developed and altered enormously (Afterschool Programs - From Vision to Reality, 2004).
"Today's heightened attention in after-school programs occur from two comparatively current situations. The first is that more students than ever before go into empty homes after school. These children are unaccompanied and unsupervised for more than a few hours until an adult comes home. With more women employed outside the home and the augment of single-parent families, after-school child care has developed into a serious issue in American life. The second cause for this increase of interest in after-school programs is that outlooks for students have changed."
