The paper reveals that achievement scores from schools in affluent neighborhoods have been shown to be higher than those from lower income neighborhoods. The paper examines the literature on the impact of socioeconomic status upon students and reveals that monetary influence has been shown to play only a minor role. The paper also looks at studies that illustrate how teacher expectations, intact family units and parent educations seem to be major influences, while poverty also plays a significant role in how children learn and retain knowledge. The paper discusses possible solutions, such as increasing the education levels of parents and the nutrition and health care of young children, as well as reducing class size.
From the Paper:"Leading a healthy and productive life, given the challenges that many young people face, especially those in poverty can be very daunting. Success requires access to appropriate information, counseling and services, as well as the development of a broad range of decision-making and interpersonal skills. The problems facing our adolescent population today is having that access, especially when attending a school within a lower socioeconomic status due to living in a poverty stricken area (UNFPA, 2005). The easiest way to measure the access to such resources is to correlate them to achievement scores used to evaluate the quality of the school. This does assume that those schools with higher achievement scores have better life skill programs in place which very little research could be found to support. What was found was a correlation between higher achievement scores relating to better life skills which related to higher socioeconomic status."
