The paper looks at the reasons for studying organizational behavior and the historical approaches to it. The paper analyzes how individuals and groups within organizations act and react with each other in order to help managers become more effective both in directing their own activities, the activities of their subordinates, and in working with others within the company.

From the Paper:

"Understanding how individuals behave within organizations is important to managers seeking to improve their own productivity and the productivity of their subordinates. The study of organizational behavior is a recent phenomenon that has evolved from pitting managers against employees to seeking a situation where managers and employees work together to achieve the objectives of the organization. Extensive studies have been undertaken to determine the various ways in which employees can be motivated, ways in which decisions can be made and implemented, and ways in which communication takes place. What has resulted is a wide variety of theories that seek to explain and predict how individuals and organizations will behave in certain situations."
