From the Paper:

"The relationship with IBM allowed Microsoft financial freedom to begin work on other software products that are still widely used today. Titles such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint were all created and run successfully on the Macintosh operating system, and later DOS (Cusumano & Selby 1995). But the leader of the pack would turn out to be a project announced to the world in November 1983: Microsoft Windows (Cusumano & Selby 1995). The initial excitement soon died off, however, when the project lagged in expected release dates (Inside 2000). While we may be used to seeing a Windows release promised and not delivered on time, this was rare in 1984 and signified that your product was probably not going to get off the ground (Inside 2000).
