This paper looks at the gender perception and the concept of masculinity during the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and the 1990s. The author discusses the impact of the hippie movement and the sexual revolution in the 1960s and its effects on gender roles in that period before touching on the feminist movement beginning from the late 1960s that gave rise to the Men's Liberation movement in the 1970s. The paper examines the gay rights movement during the 1970s and the new strand of feminism known as the lesbian feminism. The author also looks at the yuppie syndrome in the 1980s and the rise of the term metrosexual in the 1990s.

From the Paper:

"Of course, the shift in gender perceptions that occurred within the hippie community must be taken in to consideration in the wider context of the so-called sexual revolution of the 1960s. The sexual revolution grew out of mid-century perceptions that men and women were opposite sexes - that is, their gender roles were determined by nature, rather than culture. Therefore, anatomical differences between men and women were not just bodily - they implicated the psyche, as well. It was widely believed, throughout the 1950s and 1960s, that categorical differences between men and women were part of human nature and could not be refuted."
