From the Paper:

"Of course, the shift in gender perceptions that occurred within the hippie community must be taken in to consideration in the wider context of the so-called sexual revolution of the 1960s. The sexual revolution grew out of mid-century perceptions that men and women were opposite sexes - that is, their gender roles were determined by nature, rather than culture. Therefore, anatomical differences between men and women were not just bodily - they implicated the psyche, as well. It was widely believed, throughout the 1950s and 1960s, that categorical differences between men and women were part of human nature and could not be refuted."
