"These early computers were physically very large, and by today's standards, had limited computational capability. Advances in electronics following World War II (most notably the invention of the transistor) helped to reduce the physical size of the machines, ultimately leading to the development and widespread use of mainframe computers and their associated "centralized" information technology hierarchy and management model."
