Description:

The paper examines the social and cultural environment of the English Romantic painter Benjamin Robert Haydon's early life, as well as his family circumstances and educational experiences, in order to shed light on what influences were brought to bear upon him, especially in his formative years. The paper analyzes the relationship of Benjamin Robert Haydon to the art of the nineteenth-century and then discusses Haydon's influence on John Ruskin's social concepts of nineteenth-century art.

From the Paper:

"Haydon was born in Plymouth, England on January 26, 1786, and was the only son of a prosperous printer and publisher. His father was well known in the community as a serious and accomplished man with a great interest in literature and history, and spared no effort to pass on his high regard for learning to his son. These facts are important to consider, for they illustrate and explain Haydon's deep interest in history and his lifelong fascination with famous people and events. They also provide an understanding as to
why Haydon had such great ambition, and demonstrate that he considered it very important to live a life of great achievement and renown, just as the heroes of his
youth had done.
"Haydon's father of course wasn't his only influence, his teachers and his own inquisitiveness also played an important part in inspiring him to pursue his artistic
dreams of greatness. When Haydon was a child he attended Plymouth grammar school and Plympton St. Mary school. Reading Joshua Reynolds's Discourses fired a youthful passion within him for history painting, while a Neapolitan employee of his father fostered his talent for drawing. (Peters 3)"
