Description:
This paper discusses ideological shifts between liberalism and conservatism in American history from 1932 to 2000 and contends that these changes are supported by results of American Presidential elections. The paper argues that such changes are commonplace in a democracy and are an artifact of changing social, economic and political climates that shape and inform public opinion. The paper also demonstrates that few leaders can be characterized as exclusively liberal or exclusively conservative.
From the Paper:
"Differentiating between liberalism and conservatism can be difficult. Generally, the terms refer to positions held on major issues or social processes (Foner, 1998). For the most part, liberals are perceived as being against tax cuts, for government spending on social welfare, in favor of government regulation and oversight of business and industry, and generally supportive of programs that advance an agenda that reflects the interests of groups characterizing themselves as disadvantaged. Conservatives, in contrast, are seen by Foner (1998) as interested in tax cuts, reduced government spending on social welfare, and increased spending on defense, states rights versus federalism, limited government regulation of business and industry, and supportive of the interests of business as opposed to unions. However, as both Foner (1998) and Johnson (1997) have noted, few political leaders are exclusively liberal or exclusively conservative. While no one would deny that Richard M. Nixon was generally conservative in his political views, he also established the Environmental Protection Agency, which introduced a host of new regulations impacting upon big business (Whitney, 1993)."Cite this Research Paper:
