Description:

The paper relates that the problem of homelessness accelerated throughout the early 1980s, when two trends-a worldwide financial crisis and an adoption of socially conservative government policies in the U.K. and U.S.-combined to put more people into the streets. The paper reveals that a large percentage of the new homeless suffered from mental health problems; over the past three decades, this proportion has increased to the point where mental health problems are an accurate predictor of homelessness in industrial societies. This literature review offers an overview of homelessness and mental health from 1980-2009, with special attention to the U.S. and U.K. It surveys political, economic, and sociological research in order to present a full-spectrum overview of a topic that has often been approached piecemeal.
