Description:

This paper explores violence as experienced by couples in Hispanic and Mexican communities, specifically in intimate relationships. The paper examines the factors that contribute to this violence such as cultural and ethnic diversity, immigration and acculturation, and socioeconomic factors including poverty and unemployment. The paper notes that these findings can be helpful in understanding and addressing the issue of domestic violence among Mexican Americans and in developing a shelter-based community, culturally sensitive education, and prevention and intervention strategies.

From the Paper:

"Domestic Violence is a common phenomenon all over the world; as disputes among family members and couples arise they often lead to violence. The domestic family violence is prevalent in societies where there is a low literacy rate and it's usually men who use violate methods and force to oppress their partners. The cause of the disputes varies and disputes mainly arise from the economic problems that are faced by the family. Though it is believed that these problems are common in developing countries where there are severe economic conditions and very low literacy rate. But the domestic violence exists in societies like America, which are considered as developed countries with high literacy rate. The reason given for the domestic violence in societies like America is varied too, these can be unemployment, frustration, drug and alcohol addiction. These domestic violence is very common among white, black and Hispanic couples in United States. It is argued that these domestic violence are common among ethnically diverse populations because women who are subject to these violence, have immigration problems and are unaware of laws and resources available to them."
