From the Paper:
"Lebanon is a country where cultural diversity flourishes. A history filled with occupations and economic trade has insured that the typical Lebanese person is competent at speaking Arabic, English and French. Thus the Lebanese society is a rich multilingual society. The capital of Lebanon, Beirut, is the epicentre of cultural diffusion in Lebanon, there, numerous codes and varieties coexist to create a linguistic paradise. In the heart of the capital lies the American University of Beirut, where students seek graduate studies. These students come from different educational and social backgrounds, meaning interactions between students are extremely interesting to watch. An undergraduates first semester is full of funny, awkward and strange conversations that he has with other "unexperienced" students. Al of these students became competent at more than one language at an earlier stage, and they then started making use of a linguistic practice called code switching. "It is a form of language practice where individuals employ various combinations of two or more linguistic varieties (languages or dialects) to accomplish conversational purposes, but at the same time convey different aspects of their personal, social and ethnic identity" (Heller 1995; Gardner-Chloros 2009; Dabene and Moore 1995). These code switching students then arrive to AUB and take part in daily interactions between themselves and others form different educational backgrounds on Campus. The main question that can be asked here and that will conduct the path of this paper is: Do Students code switch regularly on AUB campus? Answering this question is nothing but a basic part of this paper. Why and how students' code switch and the general acceptance of code switching on campus are questions that have to be answered."Cite this Research Paper:
