What Makes Alternative Media Alternative?
Media Theories

From the Paper:

"Joshua D. Atkinson is assistant professor in the School of Media and Communication at Bowling Green University. He believes that in order to be truly "alternative" a media company or institution must "adhere to one of three definitions" that have been established in journalism and media studies literature. The three are: a) alternative content; b) interpretive strategies of audiences; and / or c) alternative production (Atkinson, 2010, p. 22). As to alternative content, Atkinson echoes Albert by saying that in order for a publication to be truly alternative, the content must "challenge power structures and attempt to transform social roles" (p. 22). He gives examples - websites like and radio programs like Democracy Now! - of obviously alternative media; but then he offers a surprise by suggesting that NPR's program All Things Considered and the magazine The Nation are technically alternative because they are "challenging power structures" (22).
