Description:
The paper examines Robert Browning's poem "My Last Duchess." The paper illustrates the variety of poetic techniques used by the poet to convey the ironic nature of the speaker's depiction of himself as an abused and misused husband.
From the Paper:
"The mood and tone of "My Last Duchess" and the character of the narrator are immediately and concisely revealed in Browning's first line "That's my last Duchess painted on the wall." Looking as if she were alive, Kennedy claims that Browning may have modeled his speaker after Alonzo Duke of Ferrara. In this poem the speaker narrates an account of his former wife, the titular Duchess of the poem who the speaker has murdered."Cite this Poem Review:
