Description:

The paper looks briefly at Charles Sangster's, "The St. Lawrence" and the "Saguenay", and describes how the poem's broad features hint at the relationship between the geographic area in question and the human beings who (in the nineteenth century) were called upon to grapple with the aforementioned landscape and climate. As well, the paper looks at how that relationship has possibly changed over time as man has developed the tools for controlling the natural world around him. In the final analysis, Sangster's poem is evocative because it seeks to capture the sublime aspects of the St Lawrence region - and because it hints at the real challenges this daunting part of early Canada posed to nineteenth century commerce and civilization.
