This paper discusses the high school dropout in terms of contributing factors and presents the thesis that the dropout level is occasionally a reflection of personal inadequacy or a dysfunctional family, but more frequently, is a symptom of a dysfunctional society in which education serves politics. The paper highlights inadequacies in the school system that does not account for cultural disadvantages and argues that the system sets certain students up for failure because of a largely irrelevant curriculum.

From the Paper:

"The dropout must be understood in light of at least six factors: educational, psychological, familial, social, economic, and political. Furthermore, dropping out must not be regarded as a 'problem'. "Dropping out is thus a symptom - a dramatic indicator of more basic problems and limitations that leave an individual ill-suited to the typical high school environment" (Bachman 1). Surprisingly, the dropout does not conform to what would be expected in terms of socioeconomic classes. A study conducted in Syracuse, New York revealed that a large proportion of dropouts are found among middle-class white-collar workers. There are new demands made even on blue-collar workers. "For instance, an investment firm here wants a mail clerk, but a mail clerk with a college education" (Cervantes 2).
"One way of distinguishing the reasons why dropouts behave as they do within the low-income category is based on variables. These dropouts can be classified into four further categories: school-inadequate, school-rejecting, school-perplexed, and school-irrelevant. School-inadequate refers to those who experience problems with either intellectual or emotional functioning. The student who rejects school does so because the system is perceived as confining or useless."
