Description:

The paper asserts that the current macro-economic situation in the United States is not good. The paper discusses how in the United States, the US Standard of Value is the American greenback - just as it is throughout the Americas (Makin, 2000). The paper notes that right now, however, the US greenback appears to be actually gaining some traction relative to other international currencies - and this is chiefly because the US denomination is still seen as a safe investment for investors (Lien, 2009). The paper explains however, that if the US dollar appreciates relative to other currencies in Europe and throughout Asia, then this will cause problems in America because US exports will become more expensive; imports into America will become cheaper (therefore sparking demand for them); and the current account deficit will inevitably grow worse. The paper argues that given everything else that is unfolding, that is not good news.
