From the Paper:

"In the song "Take A Walk", Passion Pit explores the emotional and cultural implications of recession as a response to economic and political shifts. Materialistic pressures created by society, especially at a time of economic decline, generates hardships and struggles that become exceedingly hard to overcome as the American dream is pursued. Along with other emotional consequences, acknowledging financial strains poses as a threat to pride. Considering the negative impacts of recession contributes to the need to search for relief, encouraging us to "take a walk" (Passion Pit).
"Cultural norms of society impact the financial aspect of life. When a recession occurs, the entire market experiences a downturn, and the affects are quite broad. In addition to affecting the poorest citizens, the wealthiest of the country are also greatly affected. Society today is driven by materialistic tendencies that are difficult to abstain from, even in times of economic distress. Individuals are inclined to disregardthe need for monetary aidto accommodate for a "lifestyle to front" (Passion Pit) for society and for their own self-regard. Although living beyond ones own meanscreates a build up of debt, portraying the appearance of wealth allows individuals to hide their true state of affairs. Attempting to keep up with a lifestyle by relying on the excuse, "I'm just too much a coward to admit when I'm in need" (Passion Pit), seems valid during an overwhelming period. Confronting the actuality of defeat by seeking help can be worse than continuing to struggle to provide for one's self. The steady beat of the music resembles that of a military march, bringing about connotations of productivity and forward motion. This beat subtly reinforces society's drive for success and expectations of pushing through hardships without showing weakness portrayed within the lyrics, also reinforcing the difficulty of the acceptance of failure."Accounts are overdrawn" (Passion Pit) in order to maintain a facade, and an accumulation of financial obligations, such as bank loans, result."
