"It is important that infants are studied in each of their particular age periods. In this sense, we candistinguish the developmental uniqueness of infants at each age. In understanding these processes, we are able to gauge why, for instance, there are different developmental pathways in different cultures for the meaning and dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Thus, in studying infancy, we arrive at an understanding of why and how different cultures work. By doing this, we can improve relations not only between individuals, but also between societies.
"It is important to emphasize that human relationships are developing systems that are self-organizing and self-sustaining. The way we come to understand this reality is through a study from a developmental perspective, taking account of transactions between parents and children.
Individual development has to be set against the background of relationship change and cultural change. Studying infancy, therefore, gives us a better insight into the dynamics of human development in general."
