Description:
This paper discusses the lack of impact by animal rights activists on producers and consumers of animal products, despite common arguments and convincing tactics. The paper reveals that activists have not been successful in effecting any marked changes, either economically or socially, on producers or animal products, or even on the consumers who claim to agree. The paper notes the arguments in favor of using animals for humanity's benefit and shows how despite their sometimes militant tactics, the arguments of these activists have had no ultimate effect.
From the Paper:
"Indeed, the environmental cause has acquired new vigor. With this new vigor has come a sizable jump in the temperature of the debate. The sharp-tongued animal defenders more and more often seem to turn from speech to harassing and punitive actions-picketing and boycotting offending businesses, placing lurid ads, raiding and burning laboratories where animal research is conducted, and splashing red paint or blood on the houses and cars of the researchers. Moreover, these actions are justified in the guise of civil disobedience, as was the case at several designer fur shops in New Jersey in 1997, wherein shops were vandalized and furs were ruined (Hayes 3)."However, it is clear that society merely owes animals any debt as God's creatures. Even conferring rights on animals is not the same as a natural or moral right to which the animal is entitled by its very nature. Instead, it is a divinely imposed obligation, and as such, it is precisely (no more and no less) the duty of stewardship. The Bible is clear: animals were put here for human benefit; not the other way around."
