Description:

The paper reveals that the earthquake in Haiti destroyed the sparse provisions of the nation's political as well as economic infrastructure and points out that distribution and providing skilled practitioners is just as critical as dispensing food and medical supplies. The paper also discusses how corrupt and inefficient leadership has hampered the relief efforts and how improving Haiti's housing, sanitation, transportation, and education is essential to reduce the spread of communicable diseases. Furthermore, the paper maintains that training relief workers how to cope with the specifics of the situation and training Haitians to act as continual supports of healthcare efforts is essential. The paper concludes that correcting the immediate problems of displacement and trauma alone merely scratch the surface of Haiti's suffering; there must be measures to ensure that the public infrastructure of Haiti's government, provision of services, and the education of its populace rises above the level it was before the earthquake.

From the Paper:

"On a very simple, basic level the earthquake in Haiti was a public health concern because of the physical suffering the initial quake caused the nation. But while a disaster such as an earthquake can be catastrophic, even for a nation as wealthy as the United States, Haiti faces additional challenges. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere "and its infrastructure is already at a disadvantage. The earthquake not only affected Haiti's roads and airport, but also damaged its ports, making effective relief efforts difficult" (Lee & Tenny 2010, p.5). Despite the fact that Haiti had endured natural disasters before, the government had engaged in little meaningful emergency planning. Few social support structures existed even during the best of circumstances and the earthquake destroyed the sparse provisions of the nation's political as well as economic infrastructure. "The Haitian earthquake...devastated the country's government, killing 17 percent of its work force and destroying all but one ministry building, along with its phones, vehicles, computers" (Bellerive & Clinton 2010).
"While many international organizations offered aid to Haiti, simply gaining access to people in need was a challenge. Often, when there is a call for donations to an affected area, donors in the developed world who give money and supplies are angry when they see people still in need on the television, despite the fact that provisions are piling up in airports and warehouses. This highlights that distribution and providing skilled practitioners is just as critical as dispensing food and medical supplies."
