Description:

This paper addresses teenage pregnancy as a major social concern and argues that policy-makers do not understand that the real problem is not teenage sex but unwanted teenage pregnancy. The paper contends that teenage sex should not be stigmatized, but it should be openly discussed so as not to make it seem immoral. Furthermore, the paper argues that teenage contraceptive use must be seen as sensible and not shameful. The paper highlights the need for an ongoing dialogue and exploration to gain understanding and insight into the experiences of pregnant adolescents.

From the Paper:

"Sexuality is a normal part of human development; however, sexual activity initiated during adolescence presents a number of challenges. Teenage pregnancy, in particular, is a major social concern. Though teenage pregnancies have declined in the U.S. in the last decade from 1 million to about 900,000 per year [1], the U.S. continues to have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and childbirth of any Western industrialized nation. [2]
"To address some of the challenges related to teenage pregnancy and childbearing, the National Health Objectives for the year 2010, established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (2000) include the goals of: (a) reducing teenage pregnancy, (b) decreasing infant mortality rates, and (c) promoting prenatal care.
