This paper traces the illegitimate uses of standardized testing in the past and discusses its ineffective uses today. The paper argues that standardized tests have no real purpose but to keep people walking a line drawn by other people; it is no measure of what a person thinks or how his or her mind works or how he or she can put together ideas. The paper further argues that these tests are discriminatory against women, blacks and people from other countries.

"My aunt Ann is very intelligent and extremely creative. She can write about anything. She has a BA in English Literature. She wanted to become a writer but everyone in the family told her she should be practical and get her masters degree in Library Science and be a librarian. She took the standardized test for entering graduate school called the GRE.She scored just average the vocabulary portion and pretty low in the logic and math portions of the test. The director of the Library Science program told her that she would not do well in the library science program and did not accept her even though she admitted that the final tests for the degree were oral and essay and a dissertation which is writing. This is an example of the illogic that exists with standardized testing. If you answer a bunch of multiple choice questions you can get into graduate school even though the real test for the degree is essay. Standardized tests have no real purpose but to keep people walking a line drawn by other people. It is no measure of what a person thinks or how his or her mind works or how he or she can put together ideas."
